Kirchberg in Tyrol is only 6km from Kitzbühel and is linked to the world famous KitzSki area.

With 230km of pistes and the famous Hahnenkamm run, KitzSki is an extensive and satisfying ski destination. The focus of the Kirchberg village is its 13th century church, surrounded by a nice shopping street with high-end stores, excellent restaurants and relaxed bars, all set in the rolling green hills of the Brixental Valley. Summer facilities in the area are equally impressive, from hiking and mountain biking to traditional equestrian parades. You can swim in the lake in the summer. The exclusive Kitzbühel Country Club is nearby. Good transport infrastructure makes Kirchberg an easy place to reach, Innsbruck airport is the closest, road and rail access is efficient from Salzburg (1h 20m) or Munich (1h 30m). Kirchberg is ideally located being also a short distance from SkiWelt, an area of 279km of pistes which encompasses eight villages in two valleys, ninety cable cars and seventy seven bars, restaurants, cafes and Alpine huts.

Midway between Kitzbühel to the east and Brixen im Thale to the west, at the confluence of the Brixental and Aschauer valleys, Kirchberg is part of the famous Kitzbüheler Alpen and KitzSki ski areas and has easy access to the vast SkiWelt ski domain. Kirchberg is a pleasant traditional Tirolean riverside village with a lively centre with a lovely church perched on a hill. The surrounding countryside has a more rural feel, with 100 farms in the area. Without the queues and prices of its more illustrious neighbour, the apres-ski scene is lively, and the village attracts a younger and more informal clientele.

Kirchberg has an all-round appeal that extends beyond its skiing, the sports centre has indoor tennis, squash, golf, sauna, multigym and solarium and an indoor pool. Some say that in Kirchberg in Tirol horse-drawn sleigh rides in the winter are nearly as popular as the skiing. There are plenty of good 3 star hotels in the village, many have spa facilities. Some lovely chalets and apartments are available to rent.

Innsbruck Airport is 100km south-west of Kirchberg, Salzburg Airport is 80km to the north-east. Kirchberg is only 130km from Munich.

Kirchberg in Tirol ski area

Much of the skiing in and around Kirchberg is suited to intermediate skiers and snowboarders, with some lovely long valley runs, some through the trees. But the extent of the skiing means there is something for all abilities. The lifts are modern and efficient. The longest run in the area is 8.3km this linked series of easy blue pistes is ideal for novices and intermediate skiers, down into Kirchberg. Intermediates and more advanced skiers will want to explore the Jochberg-Pass Thurn area as well. Advanced skiers will feel themselves drawn to the infamous Streif racecourse in the Hahnenkamm area and the long Schwarzkogel run down to Aschau. The Kitzbüheler Horn, Hahnenkamm, Fleckalm and Pass Thurn all feature perfectly groomed pistes. The iconic Kitzbuheler Horn is of particular interest to freestyle enthusiasts as it houses a good snowpark. The separate Gaisberg ski area, close to the town, hosts an exhilarating toboggan run, an ice climbing wall, as well as facilities for night skiing.

Visitors can choose the Kitzbuhel-Kirchberg-Pass Thurn lift pass to ski only on this domain. The regional Kitzbuheler Alpen All Star Card lift pass also includes the vast and superb SkiWelt area. The ski area is accessed by the Fleckalmbahn and Maierlbahn gondolas, each just a short ski-bus ride from the centre of the village.

When is the best time for a ski trip to Kirchberg in Tirol? The snowiest week in Kirchberg is historically the first week of March. Whilst the slopes enjoy a good snow record on average, the modern snow making facilities covering almost half the pistes at Kirchberg ensure excellent conditions during the season.

Kirchberg is renowned for its very lively après ski, which gets going from mid-afternoon onwards. And there is quite a choice, from laid-back cosy pubs to packed music-bars featuring live bands, DJs, and of course dancing on tables. The terrace of the Boomerang Cafe-Pub is always popular, the Londoner Pub as well. There is also a variety of après ski huts on the run down to Kirchberg, including the Schneebar Oberkaser, Maierlalm and Schi-Alm

Kirchberg and the KitzSki ski area have plenty of traditional Tirolean mountain restaurants. Closer to Kirchberg, the Ochsalm hut and sun terrace is a popular option, in particular for families. The restaurants around Steinbergkogel and Ochsalm typify the good value options in the area.

Finding a place for dinner in Kirchberg is no problem with many fine restaurants, pizzerias and cafes. The Kupfer Stub’n offers local and international culinary delights, or for the best pizza outside Italy visit Pizza Nabucco. Plenty of other good restaurants are around town, meat lovers must check out Asado’s Steakhouse for a memorable steak. Alternatively, an evening meal on the Gaisberg is highly recommended.

In summertime, Kirchberg has access to over two thousand kilometres of hiking, cycling and mountain biking trails. Swimming and sunbathing at the lakes and fishing are all popular activities. Wherever you are, lush Alpine meadows, sparkling mountain lakes and delightful food are all around. The imposing Wilder Kaiser to the north and the main ridge of the Alps to the south offer fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding peaks from the summit of Gaisberg mountain.

For hikers, over 2500 kilometres of hiking trails in Kirchberg and the Kitzbüheler Alpen with themed trails, multi-day hikes and family hikes. The Gaisberg Mountain (1,770m) is the nearest peak, take the cable car to the top or explore from the trails starting in the village. For longer hikes, head out into the Kitzbühel Alps, the distinctive Großer Rettenstein (2366m) is a favourite with local hikers. There are a number of lodges to take a break or stay the night.

Over 1000 kilometres of road bike and mountain bike trails in Kirchberg and the Kitzbüheler Alpen. For mountain bikers some good routes start from Kirchberg with refreshment stops at Gasthof Labalm and Gasthaus Steinberg on the way. You can cycle to Kitzbühel, passing the beautiful Schwarzsee lake. A revered route is the Fleckalm, which drops 1000 vertical metres over 7 kilometres. Kirchberg hosted the fifth stage of the International Specialized Enduro Series, the tracks and routes are well established and favoured by mountain bikers from all over Europe. E-bikers benefit from a large and well sorted network with 17 hire places and 15 charging stations, including Kirchberg.

This is a golfers paradise too with nine fantastic golf courses, including two excellent championship 18-hole courses, in the surrounding 50 kilometre area. Thanks to a great selection, with large variety of terrain, golfers of every skill level are ensured a memorable and exciting game with majestic mountain views. Many clubs have hotels, as a result golf ‘touring’ is especially popular.

For motoring enthusiasts, the well established Kitzbüheler Alpenrally is a fabulous event.
