Read our guides by resort about the skiing, property markets and the many summer activities on offer in the top resorts in the French Alps.
The French Alps are the most visited Alpine region for good reason: extensive, high, snow-sure skiing with the broadest appeal in the Alps, for every type of skier and budget.
The 3 Vallées is the largest linked ski area in the world and home to Courchevel, Méribel, Saint Martin de Belleville and Val Thorens each with their hamlets and villages that make up this incredibly diverse and unrivalled region. The property market is active throughout the 3 Vallées, with a vast range of types of properties and new developments. Following the Isère river to its source, we find Val d’Isère, a world class ski village which goes from strength to strength with a combination of seriously impressive skiing, good infrastructure and some valuable properties. Its neighbour, Tignes, is equally snow-sure. The Portes du Soleil is a huge, varied, and accomplished ski network encompassing 6 villages each in France and Switzerland, the best known being Morzine and Les Gets which share the largest area of local slopes. This is the largest Mountain Biking region in the Alps, a class act for pros and amateurs in the summer months. Needing no introduction, Chamonix is the home of mountaineering with a magnetic attraction for the adventurous and off-piste enthusiasts; all along the Chamonix valley is a large, varied and active property market. The region between Chamonix and Megève, known as Pays du Mont Blanc, has Saint Gervais Les Bains at its centre, and villages such as Passy and Servoz which extend up to Combloux and Les Contamines. All have spectacular views of Mont Blanc. Megève itself is a special and beautifully preserved alpine village with excellent facilities, amazing restaurants, and some of the most magnificent chalets in the Alps. Elsewhere in the French Alps we are featuring Alpe d'Huez in the highly regarded Grand Domaine ski area. La Plagne is part of a huge ski area with a thriving property market. The Massif des Aravis is a fine ski area close to Annecy, which includes the villages of La Clusaz and Le Grand-Bornand.
