Morzine Information & Property Market Summary

Morzine is a traditional and charming market town in the Portes du Soleil; straddling a river gorge. Morzine offers a huge range of both summer and winter activities. Characterised by tree lined slopes and intermediate terrain well suited to beginners with linked skiing to the more challenging runs in Avoriaz, it is a resort that can grow with you as your skills develop. With considerable investment in snowmaking and lift infrastructure around the mountain, queues are decreasing and demonstrate that Morzine means business. In the summer, Morzine is home to a huge international mountain biking community, attracted to 600km of lift accessable trails for all levels – in 2018 the French Championship was held in Morzine. Hotels, apartments, chalets, shops, bars and restaurants are clustered around the main route through the village and most facilities are within walking distance adding to the popularity of this thriving resort in the French Alps.

What about properties for sale in Morzine? Morzine attracts an international clientele of buyers and visitors. One, two and three bedroom Alpine ski chalets line both sides of the valley rising up from the busy village centre and there are frequently smart new apartment buildings offered for sale by local estate agents. Prices for luxury new chalets range from €8500-11,000 per sqm. Prices come down further from the village centre and down the valley towards Montriond and Essert-Romand. The dual-seasonality of the resort, its situation in the Portes du Soleil and the fact that is is only one hour fifteen minutes from Geneva airport all underpin demand for property in Morzine and its allure with buyers.

A guide to Morzine

Morzine is the capital of the expansive Portes du Soleil ski area, which is made up of 13 different Swiss and French ski resorts. Morzine has a history going back centuries, agriculture, and mining were the principal industries before the first ski lift was built in 1934. Avoriaz, and the links to the Swiss sector were created by local racer and Olympic Gold medallist Jean Vuarnet.

Guests can choose from an extensive array of modern hotels, apartments and vast contemporary chalets to beautifully restored farmhouses in which to stay during their winter and summer holidays.

Morzine keeps busy, towards the end of the season, the renowned Rock the Piste festival arrives on  the slopes of the Portes du Soleil. Snowboxx is another popular festival in March in nearby Avoriaz.

For non-skiers, Morzine offers a variety of alternative winter activities including ice skating and snowmobiling as well as ice climbing and tobogganing. In the summer, it is a hugely popular mountain biking venue.

Just 1 hour and 15mins from Geneva airport, Morzine is an easily accessible resort for weekend breaks.

Morzine Ski Area

There’s a lot of ground to cover in the Portes du Soleil given 34 green pistes, 119 blue pistes, 101 red pistes and 32 blacks. Overall the area is recognised as an intermediates paradise with wide tree-lined blue and red runs, as such it is ideally suited to families. But there is impressive and accessible off-piste terrain to explore, some challenging blacks and some of the best snowparks in Europe around Avoriaz

The area also offers some superb off-piste around Lindarets, Chatel and Linga, there is often some good off-piste snow to be had around Piste A and Piste R under the Pleney lift.

Prodains is the big telecabine that takes you directly into Avoriaz. There are some great runs in Avoriaz and it boasts an impressive snow park and halfpipe. This is where the best snow is to be found. Avoriaz gives you easy access to Lindarets, which links to Chatel and Switzerland.

When it’s busy head to the Linderets bowl at the top of the Ardent lift to escape the crowds. The car park at the bottom of the lift is free or you can ski to it from Avoriaz. You can ski to Switzerland from Morzine via the Mossettes lift from Linderets or the Swiss Wall. The Swiss resorts in the Portes du Soleil are worth a visit. Morgins is often less busy during peak periods than the French resorts. If you have the energy, it is possible to ski a full circuit of the Portes du Soleil area, starting and finishing in Morzine.

Visitors to Morzine have three lift pass options offering ideal flexibility for your skiing ambitions. Lift links between the resorts are constantly being upgraded as well as piste layouts to improve flow and reduce congestion on the slopes. The ski area has invested in state of the art snowmaking, and while the upper slopes of Morzine get plenty of snow, when there is too little snow there may be green patches on the lower slopes at both the beginning and end of the season.

Après ski in Morzine

The aprés ski scene in Morzine is vibrant. There are always bands and DJs to listen to during happy hours priced drinks.
