La Rosière new ski area
La Rosière has come a long way. Hannibal is thought to have marched his 40 elephants through this area on his passage through the Alps. The village sits ‘en route’ to the Petit St Bernard pass. The road was built by the Romans, became a pilgrimage route in the 11th century, a trade route thereafter and was rebuilt in Napoleonic times. Pilgrims in distress were rescued by Saint Bernard dogs. Fierce fighting took place in WW II at the border post.

Developed in the early 1950s as a ski resort on the site of an old hamlet, ‘La Ros’ is perched high up above, but only 30 minutes from, Bourg-St-Maurice, and at the same altitude as Val d’Isère. The first lift was installed in 1960, the link to La Thuile in 1985. Today, La Rosière sports 160 km of pisted runs (or 152 verified by Montenius Consult) including the linked La Thuile ski area thanks to the new expansion of the ski area. La Rosière gets plenty of snow, 7 meters at the top in 2016, 11m in 2017-18 and 3m in the village.
Opened in December 2018, the Mont Valaisan sector has 5 red runs served by 2 new 6-seater detachable chairlifts up to 2800m altitude. It also opens up a wide new area of lift accessible off-piste, and has a cantilevered viewing platform at the top – hint don’t look down if you suffer from vertigo, instead look out and you’ll see Mont Blanc.
What else? January 2019 La Rosiere hosts the opening round of the Freeride World Tour and the World Freeski Playoffs in April. In the summer of 2018, La Rosière – Espace San Bernardo hosted the finish of the 11th stage of the Tour de France for the first time. At the new igloo village, indulge in a fondue or a glass of something pleasant. And the rather smart Hyatt Centric La Rosière hotel opens for the winter 2018-19 season, with 69 rooms it will be the first 4-star hotel in the village, with 2 restaurants, lots of nice facilities and sits right on the slopes. Can we stay?
When it comes to infrastructure, we are frequently asked which resorts are making meaningful changes and this is one of them. The theory is that resorts can transform themselves with new initiatives that positively impact the experience for visitors, bringing more holidaymakers and attracting investors. With property for sale prices in La Rosiere this low, it is a reasonable assumption that La Ros is at that tipping point.
