Like Megève and Gstaad, Kitzbühel is as much a lifestyle destination as ski resort, it has a proud heritage as one of the homes of Alpine skiing, and is a wonderful summer venue. The town itself dates back to medieval times and is beautifully preserved. The Hahnenkamm run is the famous annual downhill race, held since 1931, the piste is open to the public at other times. Elsewhere Kitzbühel has a decent range of mainly mellow skiing, and good snowmaking cover. A 15 minute journey takes you to the much larger SkiWelt complex. Plenty of large chalets here although visitor accommodation is mainly in hotels and guest houses; there is a wide variety of bars and restaurants.
